Cape Town Holidays in the Sun
December 2013
By Hanni Heinrich, Cape Town
Christmas is a special time in the mother city, as most of the Capetonian Christians are very religious and these holidays are celebrated with heaps of joy and sharing. That’s why Cape Town treats its inhabitants with many open-air concerts in parks or at the beach. After all, Christmas is always a bit merrier in the Southern hemisphere, where the sun always shines in December!
1. Listening to and singinging music outdoors is a common Cape Town Christmas acitivy. The 50-piece Philharmonia Choir of Cape Town and a Brass Quintet perform Christmas songs at the Carols by Candlelight at the V&A Waterfront Amphitheatre. Nothing will set you in the mood faster than hearing the music while looking out over the beach, or vineyards. Special non-drip candles will be handed out. Merry Christmas to you.
2. Nobody in Cape Town wants to spend spent the festive season in the kitchen over a hot stove (we leave that to the professionals here), so I will book my spot with family and friends at the Spice Route, an exclusive and lush wine farm towards the West coast with the most excellent food and wine and a stunning view over the city.
3. Groundswell Wood Surfboards are a green choice. Wood offers a natural alternative to synthetic materials, and the boards are long-lasting. Though they may not be too fast, they are ideal to ride great waves after a relaxing meal. Listening to Christmas tunes and riding the waves will give more joy and happiness than the most expensive perfume.
Drink of choice: Let’s start the celebration with a glass of finest Simonsig Bubbly, a sweet champagne which is so lekker it can basically be inhaled! So what can be better than sitting with you entire family at a great spot on the wine farm, looking over the landscape while enjoying the fruits of their labor?
