Artsy, Earth-Friendly Holidays in LA

December 2013

By Wendy Dembo, Los Angeles

With all the traffic, the holidays can truly be a hassle in LA, especially if you have a family! Luckily, trendy gifts and thoughtful gifts are only a click away.

1. There are many of online photo card services, but paperculture.com, has a clean, modern aesthetic and they and not only to they save trees, but they also plant a tree in honor of every order made. They will send out your holiday cards for you, and all you have to do is upload everyone’s addresses. Voila! Your friends get a personalized card with their name written on the back, and you won’t have to address or mail them. Think of the time you save.

2. If you are looking for some fantastic art to give or to get for the holidays, Steve Powers (aka Espo) is your man. The influential street artist, known for his “Love Letter to Philadelphia” piece, sells his daily “Metaltation” prints on his site for $125 ( 8x10" Hand pulled print on 334 gram Coventry Rag. Signed and numbered edition of 50) each. It’s a steal for a piece of modern American art history.

3. Outside the Lines is a coloring book for both kids and grown-ups a like. It is filled with art by noted artists like Keith Haring, Yuri Shimojo, Ryan McGinness, JK5Gary Baseman and so many more. Best part is, you get to fill in their art! The book was curated by Souris Hong-Porretta, who dreamt of a coloring book for her daughter that she would like to have.

Drink of choice: The Strauss Family Creamery comes out with the most delicious eggnog this time of year. It is organic and yummy. I wait impatiently for it all year!
